A recent study published in JAMA reveals that novice sonographers can achieve accuracy levels comparable to experts in gestational measurements after just one day of training with artificial intelligence (AI). This development marks a significant advancement in prenatal care, particularly in low-resource settings where access to expert sonographers may be limited.
The integration of AI into ultrasound probes allows clinicians with minimal experience to accurately measure gestational age, a critical aspect of pregnancy monitoring. The World Health Organization advocates for ultrasonography examinations for pregnant individuals before 24 weeks, yet this recommendation remains largely unmet in many low- and middle-income countries. The utilization of AI technology in ultrasound devices could potentially bridge this gap, offering broader access to essential diagnostic tools.
Researchers conducted a study involving 400 women in their first trimester of pregnancy in North Carolina and Zambia. Novice users, trained for just one day, used the AI-enabled device to measure gestational age through abdominal sweeps. The results showed that the mean absolute error (MAE) of these novice users was 3.2 days, comparable to the 3 days achieved by expert sonographers. Moreover, over 90% of the AI assessments fell within seven days of the ground truth, demonstrating the tool’s reliability across different patient profiles.
The study highlights the potential of AI in providing accurate gestational age measurements, especially in regions with limited healthcare resources. By enabling real-time image processing and inference on local devices, the AI model facilitates immediate clinical decision-making, enhancing obstetrical care in low-resource settings.
