Ultrasound-guided thermal ablation has shown promising results in treating thyroid carcinoma, particularly in cases of T1NoMo papillary thyroid carcinoma. A recent meta-analysis involving over 2,200 patients revealed a low recurrence rate of 2 percent and no instances of lymph node metastasis five years post-treatment.
The study, published in Academic Radiology, analyzed data from six studies where patients underwent ultrasound-guided thermal ablation using various techniques such as radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, and laser ablation. Over a mean follow-up period of 66 months, researchers observed minimal recurrence of local tumors and no new cancer developments or lymph node metastasis.
Lead author Jing Li, M.D., emphasized the safety and efficacy of thermal ablation for treating papillary thyroid carcinoma, highlighting the low incidence of thyroid and parathyroid injuries compared to surgery. The study also reported a 6 percent complication rate, with minor issues like hematomas and transient voice changes that resolved within six months.
The findings suggest that ultrasound-guided thermal ablation could serve as a viable alternative to surgery for low-risk papillary thyroid carcinoma cases. Not only does it offer long-term control of the disease, but it also minimizes the risks associated with surgical interventions, such as hypothyroidism and parathyroid gland injury.
While the study acknowledges the need for further prospective research to validate these results, the potential of ultrasound-guided thermal ablation as a primary treatment option for thyroid carcinoma is promising. The procedure’s minimally invasive nature, coupled with its low recurrence rates and minor complication profile, positions it as a safe and effective therapeutic approach.
Despite the study’s limitations, including the small number of analyzed studies and variations in ablation techniques, the overall outcomes support the growing interest in thermal ablation as a preferred method for managing thyroid carcinoma. With ongoing advancements in ultrasound technology and treatment protocols, ultrasound-guided thermal ablation could revolutionize the standard of care for thyroid cancer patients.
