Mexican Cave Reveals Ancient Artifacts of Tlacotepehua Culture

Deep inside a Mexican cave, two spelunkers stumbled upon what initially seemed like discarded trash. However, upon closer inspection, they unearthed a collection of artifacts dating back over 500 years. The discovery unfolded in the Tlay贸coc cave, nestled in the mountains of Guerrero, Mexico, at an elevation of approximately 7,800 feet. The cave, known locally as the “Cave of Badgers,” had remained largely unexplored for centuries until speleologist Katiya Pavlova and guide Adri谩n Beltr谩n Dimas ventured into its depths in September 2023.

As Pavlova and Beltr谩n delved deeper into the cave, navigating through narrow passageways and flooded chambers with mere inches of clearance between water and ceiling, they stumbled upon a trove of 14 artifacts. Among the discoveries were shell bracelets, a decorated snail shell, stone disks, and a fragment of carbonized wood. The spelunkers promptly alerted Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), which dispatched archaeologists to retrieve the artifacts in March.

The arrangement of the artifacts, particularly the bracelets draped over stalagmites with symbolic significance, hinted at the likelihood of fertility rituals being conducted within the cave. The artifacts, meticulously cleaned and analyzed, revealed intricate designs and markings. Archaeologists dated these objects to the Postclassic period of Mesoamerican history, between A.D. 950 and 1521, attributing them to the enigmatic Tlacotepehua culture indigenous to the region.

INAH archaeologist Miguel P茅rez Negrete suggested that the stable humidity within the cave had preserved these artifacts for centuries, shedding light on the cultural practices and beliefs of a little-known ancient civilization. The presence of incised decorations on the bracelets, including symbols associated with celestial bodies and deities, provided valuable insights into the spiritual and ritualistic practices of the Tlacotepehua people.
