RWJBarnabas Health has introduced an innovative incisionless focused ultrasound treatment program for patients grappling with essential tremor and Parkinson’s Disease. This groundbreaking technology utilizes high-intensity focused ultrasound to precisely target deep brain areas without the need for surgical incisions. The treatment, guided by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), is performed in a single session, allowing for real-time monitoring and immediate assessment of treatment outcomes.
The use of focused ultrasound therapy is a significant leap in the management of movement disorders that are unresponsive to medication. Dr. Robert E. Gross, a prominent figure in neurosurgery, emphasizes the importance of this intervention in enhancing patients’ ability to perform daily tasks that were once challenging due to tremors. The non-invasive nature of focused ultrasound complements existing treatment options, offering new hope to those struggling with movement disorders.
Insighttec’s Exablate Neuro platform, approved by the FDA in 2022, has been selected by RWJBarnabas Health for this program. This platform allows for the treatment of both sides of the body in Essential Tremor patients, as the condition often affects multiple areas. Eligible patients can receive treatment on the second side after a minimum of nine months following the initial treatment.
Dr. Ling Pan, an expert in neurology, highlights the transformative impact of this technology on the treatment landscape for essential tremor and Parkinson’s Disease. By offering more precise and less invasive therapies, patients can experience improved symptom management and an enhanced quality of life.
Starting in June, focused ultrasound therapy will be available at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset in Somerville, New Jersey. Patients are encouraged to schedule appointments to determine their eligibility for this cutting-edge treatment.
