The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) and the International Mission Board (IMB) have joined forces to place an international ultrasound machine in Southeast Asia through the Psalm 139 Project. This collaboration marked the first time these two organizations directly partnered to provide essential medical equipment to a community in need. The ultrasound machine was installed in a clinic within a region where IMB personnel serve, demonstrating a unified effort within the body of Christ to make a meaningful impact.
The machine, donated to the Eternal Peace Primary Care Clinic, was a significant addition to the healthcare services available to the Coffee People of Southeast Asia. This placement, the second of its kind through the Psalm 139 Project, aimed to support precise clinical assessments and enhance the community’s understanding of health and pregnancy. The presence of the ultrasound machine not only aids in medical diagnoses but also serves as a tool to educate and empower pregnant women about the sanctity of life.
A Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) facilitated the installation of the ultrasound machine, ensuring that the clinic staff received proper training to operate the equipment effectively. The RDMS, impressed by the warm reception at the clinic, noted the staff’s gratitude and the uplifting worship services held to celebrate the installation of the machine. The atmosphere at the clinic reflected a spirit of collaboration and shared purpose in providing quality healthcare services to the community.
The goals set for the ultrasound machine align with the core mission of the Psalm 139 Project, which originated in 2001 with the aim of supporting pregnancy resource centers. Research has shown that offering women the opportunity to view ultrasound images significantly impacts their decision to continue with their pregnancies. The ERLC’s initiative to provide ultrasound equipment and training has seen remarkable success, with over 85 machines placed through the Psalm 139 Project to date.
Since its inception, the project has steadily expanded its reach, with a goal set in 2020 to place 50 ultrasound machines in pregnancy centers by 2023. This ambitious target has been met with significant progress, as evidenced by the 12 placements made this year alone. The partnership between the ERLC and the IMB represents a milestone in the Psalm 139 Project’s journey, combining efforts in international missions and pro-life advocacy to create new avenues for sharing the Gospel.
Rachel Wiles, ERLC’s deputy chief of staff and director of the Psalm 139 Project, emphasized the significance of this partnership in advancing both the mission of the IMB and the pro-life cause. The collaboration not only enhances healthcare services but also opens doors for sharing the hope of the Gospel with women facing pregnancy decisions. The ERLC’s commitment to supporting international missions and promoting the sanctity of life underscores the unity and purpose driving this meaningful initiative.
As the Psalm 139 Project continues to expand its impact, the partnership between the ERLC and the IMB sets a powerful example of how cooperative efforts within the body of Christ can bring about transformative change. By providing essential medical resources and fostering Gospel opportunities, this collaboration exemplifies the shared commitment of Southern Baptists to uphold the value of every life and extend compassion and care to those in need.
