An online community for sonographers, EchoMentor, is revolutionizing the field of diagnostic medical sonography. Founded by Christina Werth ’13 and Hayley Bartkus ’17, both graduates of RIT’s diagnostic medical sonography program, EchoMentor serves as an educational hub for healthcare professionals specializing in sonography or ultrasound, a technique that uses sound waves for internal imaging.
Offering a range of resources including continuing education, mentorship, professional development, and patient-focused case studies, EchoMentor aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of sonographers. Accredited by various medical organizations, the platform’s courses meet the continuing education requirements for professionals in the field.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bartkus and Werth, who worked together in maternal fetal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, identified a pressing need to elevate the role of sonography in healthcare. This realization led to the birth of EchoMentor, which seeks to raise awareness about the profession’s significance, particularly in the context of evolving healthcare technologies.
As an online initiative, EchoMentor strives to provide a platform for professional growth and representation within the sonography community. Bartkus emphasizes the importance of addressing pertinent issues in the medical field, such as gender-affirming care and the Black maternal health crisis, through the platform.
With an eye on fostering mentorship and professional development, EchoMentor embodies the legacy of Hamad Ghazle, director of RIT’s diagnostic medical sonography program. The platform aims to create a lineage of mentorship that traces back to Ghazle, instilling a culture of excellence and passion for sonography.
Graduates from RIT’s program are known for their commitment to excellence and inclusivity in the field. Werth highlights their dedication to going above and beyond in patient care, education, research, and quality improvement projects. EchoMentor serves as a testament to their ethos of continuous learning and professional advancement.

Reflecting on their time at RIT, Bartkus and Werth emphasize the transformative power of passion in shaping a fulfilling career. They believe that by instilling excitement and motivation in sonographers, EchoMentor can drive positive change in the profession and contribute to life-saving healthcare practices.
