College of the Canyons (COC) is gearing up to introduce its Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program in the fall of 2025, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic offerings. The program, designed for an initial cohort of 18 students, will equip aspiring sonographers with the necessary skills to operate ultrasound technology effectively in the medical field.
Dr. Thea Sweo Alvarado, the interim assistant superintendent/vice president of instruction at COC, expressed enthusiasm about the overwhelming response to the program. The curriculum encompasses specialized training, hands-on clinical experience, and preparation for certification exams, ensuring students are well-prepared for a career in the rapidly expanding field of diagnostic medical sonography.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for diagnostic medical sonographers is expected to surge by 11% from 2023 to 2033, outpacing the average growth rate across all occupations. This growth trend underscores the significance of programs like COC’s DMS in meeting the industry’s workforce needs.
The DMS program at COC will be delivered through in-person classes at the Canyon Country campus, offering students access to cutting-edge learning facilities such as labs equipped with BodyWorks Eve Simulator Training. The comprehensive 49.5-unit curriculum includes a range of courses covering topics from introductory sonography to advanced sonographic practices and clinical education.
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates have the option to pursue national certification as Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or as Registered Technologists in Sonography (RT-S) through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
The accreditation process for COC’s DMS program is currently pending approval from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, a crucial step in ensuring the program meets established quality standards and industry requirements.
