While previous studies have primarily focused on adult populations, recent research has highlighted the potential of abdominal aortic spectral Doppler in pediatric patients, offering a non-invasive approach to assess aortic coarctation. By evaluating parameters such as peak systolic velocity, acceleration time, and Z-scores, clinicians can improve diagnostic accuracy and identify cases that may have been missed by conventional echocardiography.
A recent study conducted at the Affiliated Children’s Hospital of Xiangya School of Medicine in China investigated the clinical value of combining abdominal aortic spectral Doppler with echocardiography in pediatric patients with aortic coarctation. The research involved retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with aortic coarctation using computed tomography angiography (CTA) and subsequent surgical confirmation. The study cohort was divided into groups based on the availability of abdominal aortic spectral Doppler, with additional data collected from a control group of age-matched children without cardiac conditions.
Results from the study indicated a significant improvement in diagnostic sensitivity when abdominal aortic spectral Doppler was integrated with echocardiography.
