Study Reveals Factors Affecting Diaphragmatic Excursion in Dogs

A recent study conducted by researchers at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand has explored the feasibility of using ultrasonographic diaphragmatic excursion in healthy dogs. The study aimed to evaluate the proper ultrasound technique by varying postures and diaphragmatic locations for diaphragmatic excursion measurement, as well as to investigate intrinsic factors such as diaphragmatic sides, sex, and body weight of dogs on diaphragmatic excursion.

Diaphragmatic excursion (DE) has been an essential tool in detecting respiratory-related issues in humans. However, its application in dogs and the factors affecting DE in canines have not been extensively studied. The researchers conducted a prospective, analytic, cross-sectional study involving 44 healthy dogs, including 12 beagles and 32 dogs of other breeds. The study was divided into two parts: exploring the proper ultrasound technique by varying postures and diaphragmatic locations, and evaluating intrinsic factors affecting DE.

The results showed that the mid-diaphragmatic sublocation in the middle crus area had the highest percentage of DE detection, especially in the supine position. There was no significant difference in DE between the right and left diaphragms or between the sexes of beagle dogs. However, body weight was significantly correlated with DE among dogs of various sizes. The study concluded that the posture of the dogs and the diaphragmatic location can affect DE evaluation, with body weight being a major factor influencing DE in dogs.

The study highlighted the importance of using proper ultrasound techniques and considering intrinsic factors when assessing diaphragmatic excursion in dogs. The findings provide valuable insights into the assessment of respiratory function in canine patients. Further research is needed to explore DE in different dog breeds, thoracic cage morphologies, and diseased dogs to expand our understanding of diaphragmatic function in veterinary medicine.
