Ultrasound technology has been a cornerstone in medical diagnostics for decades, offering non-invasive and cost-effective ways to assess various health conditions. In a recent study published in BMC Gastroenterology, researchers explored the application of Ultrasound-derived fat fraction (UDFF) in evaluating hepatic steatosis in patients with Wilson’s disease (WD).
Wilson’s disease is a genetic disorder characterized by copper accumulation in vital organs like the liver, brain, and kidneys, leading to hepatic steatosis as an early sign of liver damage. The study aimed to validate the clinical utility of UDFF in assessing hepatic steatosis in WD, examine the correlation between BMI and hepatic steatosis severity, and determine the effectiveness of UDFF as an indicator for this condition.
The research involved 89 WD patients, where UDFF measurements were analyzed for consistency among sonographers and over time. Results showed a significant positive correlation between UDFF and the severity of hepatic steatosis, indicating the potential of UDFF as a quantitative tool for assessing WD-related liver conditions.
One of the key findings was the paradoxical occurrence of hepatic steatosis in WD patients with low or normal BMI, highlighting the unique nature of liver damage in this disease. While BMI did not correlate significantly with hepatic steatosis severity, UDFF emerged as an independent influencing factor for WD patients with hepatic steatosis.
The study established a UDFF cutoff value of 4.5% for diagnosing hepatic steatosis in WD, with a high diagnostic efficacy of 80% specificity and 90% sensitivity. This cutoff value provides an early detection tool for liver injury in WD patients, prompting timely intervention and management.
The research also addressed the limitations of using Hamaguchi’s score as a reference standard and emphasized the need for larger cohort studies to validate the findings further. The study’s insights into the application of UDFF in WD broaden the clinical utility of this technology, offering a non-invasive and reliable method for assessing hepatic steatosis in a rare genetic disorder.
